Within one week of the State-Level Empowered Committee (SLEC) approving the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for solid waste management of the city Corporation as part of the Swachch Bharat Abhiyan, the local body has begun the preliminary work for some of the projects. One of the key initiatives will be a model centre near Vanchiyoor, which would showcase all its waste management programmes

For this project, the HUDCO has offered Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funding to the city Corporation. The model centre will have a batch of aerobic bins, a material recovery centre and exhibition of other waste management initiatives

The plan is to make the waste processing centre a space which people would like to visit. The area will be beautified with a garden. Exhibition and sale of composting devices, inoculum, kitchen gardening tools, and other materials will be there permanently. It would be located near the Uppidammoodu bridge, with access from the top of the bridge as well as from the road below. The HUDCO has offered CSR funds of up to 70 lakh, which will be utilised for a few projects. The Corporation’s funds will also be used. This specific project is estimated to cost 24 lakh,” says a source

Aerobic bin

Another project to be taken using the CSR funds is for the renovation of the aerobic bin facility at Peroorkada

Though the SLEC has approved the DPR, we still haven’t received the details of what they have approved. We had submitted projects to the tune of ?51.37 crore. Much of it will be approved, hopefully. Only a few projects such as urban gardening might be removed,” says the official

Funding

The Corporation has submitted projects mostly to expand the existing decentralised systems. Out of this, 35% will be funded by the Central government, 23.3% by the State government and 41.7% by the city Corporation. The decentralised systems would include Thumboormozhi-model aerobic bins, kitchen bins, portable biogas plants, biocomposter, organic waste converter, renovation of community biogas plants, material collection facilities, resource recovery centres, plastic recycling unit and animal crematorium

The project is set to begin on December 15 this year and is expected to be completed on June 30
